I've never been one to hide my love away so my adoration of Human Kebab has never been a secret. No man alive can move this booty like he does--it doesn't hurt that he has a serious chub for DFA. News of his weekly radio program on Sonic 102.9 out of Edmonton delighted the fuck out of me, but it's timing of 11pm Edmo time (1am Trawna time) on Fridays and Saturdays was a total bummer. That's just when mama's pounding back the last shots of the night, losing wigs, and getting mystery bruises. I would sometimes find wi-fi and try to listen from my phone, but that rarely worked, and it's super anti-social to excuse yourself to go stand in the washroom to listen to the radio by yourself.
Somebody up there likes me, because the good people at Sonic have made all the broadcasts available on their website. You can rip 'em easily using offliberty. I want this show syndicated all over Canada. "That's just because you have a boner for Jay", you protest. I have a boner for Jay because he's talented.

OSHEAGA 2012 Line Up Hoax!

Montreal's Osheaga festival runs August 3-5 this year at parc Jean Drapeau. I've been waiting for the 2012 lineup ever since I left the park for Osheaga 2011, but this flyer floating around this week seemed to be highly suspect. It seemed a stark departure from last year's lineup. Also, the billing structure seemed slightly off. Newmarket heartthrobs Serial Joe receiving higher billing than Feist, The Weeknd, Skrillex? Soundgarden and Slash just floating around quietly the smaller acts ghetto section of the flyer? It also seemed pretty heavy on nineties acts, and kinda low on Canadians. An insane amount of big "headliner" acts. Just seemed really weird. Check out last year's lineup to compare:

There's a reason for the weirdness: the 2012 line up has been reported as fake by Osheaga's twitter folks. According to them, the real line up is mieux, (better, for those who failed)
soooo PARTY! BONUS!

Only one act has been announced this year and that's California's Young the Giant. The band'll also be making an appearance at Toronto's Edgefest July 14th alongside CV favourites Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker and Death from Above 1979. YTG has a Montrealais drummer and recently played a sold-out show at the Sound Academy last Thursday, with a cameo by Osheaga alum Tokyo Police Club.

Curtis Tone is a good friend and drummer for no less than three active bands. I've seen them all play but it's kinda hard to keep them apart. If I'm not mistaken, Lava and Ash is the one without the trumpet (That's Seymour) and without Ejay Monzones (Surf punk outfit Toxic Deathula) But at any rate, any one of his bands is a safe bet. Punk's not dead because Curtis Tone is alive.

K, so this isn't Cantastic, but it's happening in Canada so it still kinda counts. Chuck plays twice this week, solo and fronting for Hot Water Music. This one's open to nxne passes but you'll want to get there early...

Burlington Sound of Music festival June 16-19, Waterfront, Downtown Burlington. FREE. One good reason to take the GO to Burlington, the Sound of Music never disappoints. This year CV favourites Hollerado, Tokyo Police Club, Bedouin Soundclash and The Salads all rock out alongside cool local vendors and a midway, featuring perennial favourite (and occasional tummy plunger) the GRAVITRON!!

Rebel Emergency's CD Release Party June 24th at the Sound Academy. FREE. Still buzzed from their cross-country Joint Venture tour with KO and Daniel Wesley, the boys'll debut their newest "Aphrodisiology" next Friday at the Sound Academy. World AIDS day 2010

Hey kids, we have some catching up to do, and guaranteed there'll be a lot of new and sexy posts by the end of the week, but first, an important PSA from your friends at the Cantastic Voyage.

It's December 1st, which means it's World AIDS DAY! AIDS awareness, and indeed, sexual health information in general, seems to be on the decline. This is really unfortunate, because these problems may not be any fun, but they're not going anywhere and they're really important. AIDS isn't over and there are still tons of new cases every year.

Most provinces offer free rapid, anonymous testing. Check out Say Yes to Knowing in Ontario.
Keep fighting the good fight. Always, always, always practice safe sex, and if you don't, don't have sex with anybody I'm attracted to. Kidding. Kind of.

Turn on the telly... AND DO THE CBC! DO THE CBC! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! CBC 1! CBC 2! CBC 3! and...I think that's it.

No show yesterday due to technical difficulties...also known as a locked studio door. I blame the ghosts of Glendon Manor (left). Look at that place and tell me it's not haunted. We all know ghosts hate all kinds of Canadian music, with the exception of Rush, which totally turns them on and inspires them to get their phantom phreak on. Anyway, here's a post about a broadcasting company that probably almost never has to deal with ghosts locking them out of their studios: the CBC!

So last week on the show we told you about the Great Canadian Songwriting Quest, brought to you by CBC 2, which featured Two Hours Traffic and Jully Black singing about this lovely frigid land mass we call home. One song was chosen from every province and territory, and all of the musicians wrote a song about a road in their province...Jully, the Ontario rep, wrote about Roncesvalles. I don't really care about the other streets, because unless Couer de Pirate wrote about Rue Papineau in Trois-Riveres, I won't know what it is, anyway. (Rue Papineau is where you can find Manchester pool pub, 1 dollar drinks for ladies on Monday nights. It is as close as you'll get to Heaven without leaving the planet, and it's right across the street from a couche-tard) Anyway, you can find all the songs on iTunes and...take a cross country trip from P.E.I to Nunavut, I guess. You might want more than 13 songs if you're doing that.

CBC 2 to CBC 3, CBC 2 to CBC 3, do you copy?


CBC 3 just posted the long list of om-nom-noms for the Bucky Awards, and I gotta say, they kinda shat the bed. I nominated Human Kebab from USS for Sexiest Artist and USS for Best Live Act and they got snubbed hard. That's all right, boys. Hitchcock never won a directing oscar.

But ya know who DID get nominated for Sexiest Artist?

WOODHANDS.

Now woodhands, CP24 is easily the greatest song ever written about Toronto journalism. I'm really happy for you, and I'ma let you finish, but you both look like substitute math teachers. (see right: Toronto's leading indietronicists and part-time pythagorean theorists)

I kept my vote in the USS-niverse and voted for Maylee Todd, former back-up dancer and headmistress of the sweatshop hop. Whatever, CBC. More Mango Lassi-covered DJ for me. But seriously, check out Maylee's new album, Choose Your Own Adventure. That girl's got more spunk than the entire Ron Jeremy oeuvre.

Best Live Act was another cockslap, with our heroes being featured nowhere. For me this vote falls between Tokyo Police Club and Arkells. Well, it's an easy choice--they're the only bands I've even seen live on that list, but they're both a great time. What a choice! Sophie never had it so bad.

Hollerado's second video for Americanarama's been nominated for best video!

and one of my favourite lyrics of 2009 was nominated, "The grass is always greener but ya still got to cut it" from Hawksley Workman's We'll Make Time off the album MEAT.

Hollerado puts balls to the walls with this 2010 update, it's got a lot of what the bloganistas call 'buzz', and rightly so...it's more fun than a bucket of Manoticks. It was mentioned in the first show but we had no blog then...
• Reigning idiot-kings Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker were recently chosen as Canada's curators for the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange project, and I hit their going away party with a fresh-from-the-hospital Jenicka Wynne. They just came back from frickin' India, and they're heading back on November 27 to swap with India's party master Nikhil Chinapia. I hope they fill that crate back up with a million more shirts like this one...I'd give my third chakra to lick a mango lassi off that man...whoops...did I type that out loud? They'll be having a huge winter show announcement very soon, and I'll let ya know all the deeters as soon as I know 'em! Nothing says Christmas like the smooth Island sounds of Rebel!
